PHIL 140

History of Ancient Philosophy

Ancient philosophy is far more than a collection of old ideas. It is a conversation about how human beings ought to live. In this fully online Fast Track 1 course, we trace the development of Greek philosophy from the Presocratics through Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and on to the Cynics, Stoics, Epicureans, and Skeptics. Along the way, we explore enduring questions about happiness, virtue, knowledge, friendship, and the good life.

Rather than treating these thinkers as historical artifacts, we approach them as living conversation partners. Through readings, discussions, and reflection, students will discover why the ideas of Socrates, Aristotle, Epictetus, Epicurus, and others continue to influence how people think about life more than two thousand years later. All required readings are provided within the course at no cost.
