Polite and respectful<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we came to Japan for the first time in 2014, we were overwhelmed<\/span>  by how \u201cpolite\u201d the Japanese<\/span> people are.  Taking the metro train from Narita airport to downtown Tokyo, we were met by many young and old<\/span> taxi drivers at the downtown metro train<\/span> station.  We summoned a middle-age polite <\/span>taxi driver who greeted us with a deep bow.  He had gray hair but a youthful face.  He wore nice clean white<\/span> gloves and a grey taxi<\/span> suit with a matching<\/span> hat. When the polite<\/span> taxi driver bowed to us to show us respect, we copied his gesture and bowed to him.  He asked us in his broken<\/span> English where we wanted to go. I showed him a paper written in Japanese with the address of our hotel.  The helpful and polite taxi<\/span> driver said, \u201cYes, I know where your hotel is.\u201d  So he took our luggage and placed them in his trunk. Then he politely opened the door for us and signaled to us to enter his taxi and have a seat.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we entered, he bowed again.  Entering his taxi we noticed the cleanliness: the plush<\/span> seats, the clean<\/span> floor, and the spotless<\/span> windows.  His taxi had a nice fragrant<\/span> smell \u2013 no cigarette or left-over food<\/span> smell. It was a pleasant<\/span> smell and the seats were very comfortable<\/span>.  I decided to make the initial<\/span> talk and asked him if he was married.  He asked me to repeat, so I repeated the question.  He nodded his head and said, \u201cAh, yes I married. Have daughter.\u201d  I knew right away that I needed to talk real slow and more clearly. Then I asked him, \u201cWhere can I eat good sushi near my hotel.\u201d  He said, \u201cYour hotel has restaurant but sushi OK. But best ask hotel clerk for sushi place.\u201d I said, \u201cOK.\u201d Then I asked him, \u201cWhere you learn English?\u201d  He said, \u201cAh my daughter learn English school. So she learn me.\u201d  I said, \u201cOh! You have a good daughter.  And your English is good.\u201d  As we talked, I felt like he enjoyed talking to me and seemed unafraid to practice his English.  When we arrived at our hotel, the polite <\/span>taxi driver printed out the cost of the fare from a small<\/span> machine in his console of his taxi.  The short tiny<\/span> paper was easily readable<\/span> and it indicated the cost of the fare which was \u00a5500<\/a>0<\/span>, almost $50 in U.S. money. I knew that in Japan there is no tipping in any situation: taxi, restaurant or hotels. To tip someone is actually a little insulting; the services you\u2019ve asked for are covered by the price given.  After I paid the exact<\/span> amount to the taxi driver, the polite<\/span> taxi driver stepped out of his taxi and opened the door for us.  Then he took out all our luggage and placed them in front of our hotel.  A polite hotel<\/span> worker, who bowed to us to greet us and show his respect, picked them up and carried them into our big luxurious<\/span> hotel.  When we entered, all the hotel<\/span> clerks bowed to us and said, \u201cKonbawa.  Good evening.  Welcome to our hotel.\u201d  As new<\/span> tourists in Japan on our first day we felt very comfortable,<\/span> happy<\/span>, and excited<\/span> to be in Japan.  Moreover, we felt welcome<\/span>, respected<\/span>, appreciated<\/span>, and honored<\/span> by the people bowing to greet us along the way. This act of bowing to show respect and politeness is so common throughout Japan. In Japanese the term for politeness is called, \u201creigi tadashii\u201d   (\u308c\u3044\u304e\u305f\u3060\u3057\u3044).  This bowing is often preferred by the Japanese than handshake to show their respect to you, which clearly showed how they were very polite and respectful. Respect and politeness in Japan are also exhibited when younger<\/span> people greet an elderly<\/span> person or relative.  In Japan, the older a person gets the wiser he or she is considered and the more respected that elder becomes.  To use informal<\/span> language with an older<\/span> person is very disrespectful<\/span>. Thus, younger<\/span> people are always respectful<\/span> to older<\/span> people because they are revered as the ones who are wise.  They call this \u201ctanin ni taishite keii wo hyo suru\u201d (\u305f\u306b\u3093\u306b\u305f\u3044\u3057\u3066\u3051\u3044\u3044\u3092\u3072\u3087\u3059\u308b) meaning to show respect to the elder or to the wise people.  In Japan, we met many polite<\/span> and respectful<\/span> taxi drivers, hotel<\/span> clerks, tour<\/span> guides, restaurant<\/span> workers, train<\/span> workers, and practically every Japanese<\/span> people we came into contact along the way.   No doubt the Japanese<\/span> people set the standards of respect and politeness at a very high<\/span> level.  To us respect and politeness go a long way when discovering a new culture.  For this reason, our trip to Japan was one of the best<\/span> experiences we have ever had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The order of adjectives is “opinion-size-age-shape-color-origin-material.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  Latifa has the same   short (size)<\/span>  curly (shape)<\/span>     brown<\/span> (color)<\/span><\/span>    hair as her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.  My wife gave me a    beautiful<\/span> (opinion)       striped<\/span> (shape)      velvet<\/span> (color)        silk<\/span> (material)      tie for my birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
