{"id":63,"date":"2017-08-09T14:14:49","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T14:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/marguello\/?page_id=63"},"modified":"2019-03-09T18:47:22","modified_gmt":"2019-03-09T18:47:22","slug":"where-to-buy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/marguello\/where-to-buy\/","title":{"rendered":"Using the Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>ZTC (Zero Textbook Course) CLASSES<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>Effective for Summer Intersession 2019 and all future terms, ALL of my courses will be ZERO TEXTBOOK COURSE sections.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>All required readings will be posted in the course Canvas site.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you wish to obtain bound paper copies of chapters posted in the Canvas site, free copies are available from the Palomar College Library Instructor Reserve section, 1st floor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Where to Buy and How to Use the Course Books<\/h2>\n<p>If you are concerned about the number of books assigned for these courses, consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are no traditional textbooks for the <strong>History of the Americas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There are many one-volume texts for the <strong>History of Latin America<\/strong>, but for the most part they are very expensive and they present the author&#8217;s interpretation of events.\u00a0 I believe in presenting multiple interpretations, so I use a very inexpensive text for this course while suggesting others to provide a balance of voices.\n<ul>\n<li>Unfortunately there are few if any texts in translation by Latin American authors, and most of these are novels.\u00a0 Therefore I assign several novels by Spanish American and Brazilian authors.<\/li>\n<li>For this course, students may replace several texts with others that cover topics of special interest to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Audible Books are digital copies that you can listen to through your computer, phone, or tablet.\u00a0\u00a0 Audible is affiliated with Amazon.com and increasingly both Kindle and Audible copies of a book can be purchased at a reduced price, and &#8220;synced&#8221; when reading and listening.\n<ul>\n<li>This is the case with the Woodard, Starr, and Pagden books.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As there are no exams for these courses, only short essays, reports, and projects, you will not be memorizing information from these readings, but rather reviewing them for their content and themes.<\/li>\n<li>By the end of the course, many students are surprised that history books can be so well written and interesting!\u00a0 All of assigned readings from these books have one author and narrower themes than one volume texts with multiple authors.<\/li>\n<li>Most of these books can be obtained for free from local college and public libraries.\n<ul>\n<li>Please read below under <strong>Instructor Reserve Copies<\/strong> and <strong>Other Libraries<\/strong>.\u00a0 Those books that can be obtained through libraries are marked with an asterix &#8211;
