{"id":1458,"date":"2018-07-06T09:04:09","date_gmt":"2018-07-06T16:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/lmaunu\/?page_id=1458"},"modified":"2020-02-25T08:15:42","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T16:15:42","slug":"english-221","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/lmaunu\/my-classes\/english-221\/","title":{"rendered":"English 221"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">English 221\/Survey of World Literature II<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>* Please note that you don&#8217;t need to have taken English 220 (the first half of the World Literature survey class) in order to take this class.<\/p>\n<p>English 221 is a survey or overview of some of the more significant texts produced in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia from about 1660 to the present day.\u00a0 During our semester together, we will read, analyze, and discuss a variety of texts (both canonical and non-canonical) in order to sketch out a basic understanding of some of the key authors, texts, trends, and historical and cultural contexts that have shaped world literature. The class will be organized around the various movements within literary history, so we can attempt to understand the historical shifts and cultural conditions that surround the works of literature that we will read.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the questions we will be asking include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are some of the significant themes, genres, and archetypes in these texts?<\/li>\n<li>Who were some of the major authors in each of these periods?<\/li>\n<li>What historical, cultural, religious, and social conditions and concerns influenced writers in each period?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our books will be
