This is a hybrid course that requires both independent work and lab participation. This hybrid course will give you the flexibility to learn the course material at your own pace. The weekly lab sessions are designed to provide you with “hands on” opportunities to learn new skills, strengthen your understanding of the material, clarify concepts, and apply your knowledge. The laboratory is designed to complement the lectures and support you in designing and conducting psychological research.
Below are answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) about this hybrid Psychology 230 course.
1. How do I login to the course website?
During the first week of the semester, the course will be made available to students. From the Palomar College main page go to Canvas, the Learning Management System used at Palomar College.
If you have never taken a hybrid course, or are unfamiliar with Canvas, please see the Getting Started with Canvas website
2. Are there any on-campus meetings for this course?
This is a hybrid course. You will be required to complete course readings and weekly discussion boards on your own time. Course content is made accessible online for students to access on their own time.
The lab meets once a week in person at the designated class time and location. At the end of the semester, you will also be presenting your research at our Research Methods Poster Fair. Attendance at the poster fair is required for you to successfully complete this course. Please make any necessary arrangements in advance to ensure that you can attend. Additional details about the poster fair will be provided in class.
This course is fun but is also very demanding. We will cover a lot of material in class and we will focus on how to apply the information you learn. You will need to spend a lot of time on this course outside of class!
3. What type of technology is required for this course?
Canvas is the Learning Management System used in this course. Because you are taking this course in a hybrid format, you must have regular access to a reliable computer(s) and access to a stable, broadband connection to participate in the discussion forum and submit your assignments. Palomar college students have access to college computers at the computer labs on campus. As a backup, it is recommended that you consider the Canvas app for your smartphone or mobile device.
For more information, see What tools and computer skills do I need to use Canvas?

Prerequisites: Completion (with a C or better) of PSYC 100, ENG 100, and PSYC/SOC 205.
6. Are hybrid courses right for me?
Since hybrid courses do not have the structure of the traditional classroom, successful students are those who are self-disciplined, self-motivated and possess good study habits as well as good reading and writing skills. Hybrid courses require just as much of your time and effort as traditional classroom courses.
You must have RELIABLE Internet access, be comfortable browsing the Internet, and know how to use e-mail and a word-processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word).
Palomar College has excellent online tutorials and technical support to help students become comfortable with the hybrid format. If this is your first hybrid course, I recommend that you view the Canvas orientation at the link below:
