Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by education; they grow there, firm as weeds among rocks. A professor is one who talks in someone else’s sleep. To teach is to learn twice over. The ability to think straight, some knowledge of the past, some vision Only the educated are free. What was once thought can never be unthought. Ideas are indeed the most dangerous weapons in the world. Our ideas of freedom are the most powerful political weapons man has ever forged. The only means of strengthening one’s intellect is to make up one’s mind about nothing\u2014to let the mind be a thoroughfare for all thoughts. One of the reasons people stop learning is that they become less and less willing to risk failure. Education is the best provision for old age. All the knowledge I possess everyone else can acquire, but my heart is all my own. Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. Let a hundred flowers bloom. Let a hundred schools of thought contend. The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance. The life which is unexamined is not worth living. Universities should be safe havens where ruthless examination of realities will not be distorted by the aim to please or inhibited by the risk of displeasure. The man who doesn’t read good books has no advantage over the one who can’t read them. Creative minds always have been known to survive any kind of bad training.
