{"id":30,"date":"2016-08-09T10:35:19","date_gmt":"2016-08-09T17:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/?page_id=30"},"modified":"2016-10-24T16:49:34","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T23:49:34","slug":"lesson-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/lesson-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Lesson 2 &#8211; Average Costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>This section discusses the cost per unit function, how much does every unit cost?<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Average Fixed Cost<\/strong> is the first cost per unit curve that we shall analyze.\u00a0 As the name implies it is calculated by using the total fixed cost discussed previously and determining the average cost per unit.\u00a0 Since we start with\u00a0 the total fixed cost and spread this number amongst an increasing number of units, the AFC becomes smaller and smaller.\u00a0 The formula takes the Total Fixed Cost and divides by the number of units, (Formula AFC = TFC\/Q) &#8211; note that there is no AFC when you produce zero units, hence the first coordinate is at 1 unit!\u00a0 Below is a table and a graph of the AFC:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-455\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-4.jpg\" alt=\"slide1\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-4.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-4-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-4-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-4-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a>The next cost curve is the Average Variable Cost, again as the name implies these data is obtained by taking the Total Variable Cost and dividing by the number of units.\u00a0 <b>Average Variable Costs<\/b> start high, go down and after added production go back up, almost like a smile!\u00a0 As production starts the work is not very efficient, after a while workers get better at their jobs and costs go down, eventually as production increases the costs of production increase, hence the shape of the curve. Remember no costs at Zero units, so the <b>Average Variable Cost<\/b> curve starts at one unit and continues at two units, three units, etc.\u00a0 <strong>(Formula AVC = TVC\/Q). <\/strong>Below is the table for the <b>Total Variable Cost<\/b> with an added column to reflect the Average Variable cost:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/jesteban\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/52\/2016\/08\/Slide1-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-459\" <b>Average Fixed Cost<\/b> and <b>Average Variable Cost<\/b> we combine them to build the Average Total Cost<b>,<\/b> the combination of total fixed and variable, just like we did with the Total Fixed and Total Variable Costs.\u00a0 There are two methods to obtain the <b>Average Total Cost<\/b>, the first one simple takes the AFC and AVC added together, the second one takes the Total Cost figures and divides by the quantity as we did before for the AFC and AVC.\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>(Formula ATC = AFC + AVC)\u00a0 ) OR (Formula ATC = TC\/Q).\u00a0 <\/strong>Both methods are displayed below,
