Here is some general information about this course.\u00a0 As of August 10, information has been updated with exam dates.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Catalog Description<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>This course is an introduction to the anthropological view of the relationships between magic and religion as expressed in rituals, myths, and art is explored through a survey of the less formal or minor religious systems of the world.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/amobilia\/magic-and-folk-religions\/\">Catalog and SLO information<\/a><\/p>\n<p>* Students should be aware that this is not a course that promotes a particular religious or spiritual belief. We will not discuss whether a religion is true or false. The focus will be on critically exploring different religious beliefs and practices with as little judgment as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Text Requirements<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThere is one required text to purchase:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Stein, Rebecca L. and Philip L. ISBN 9780205718115.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em>Course Requirements<\/em><\/strong><em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>*To take this online course you need to have regular access to a reliable computer(s) and also have a backup in case problems arise.<\/p>\n<p>**This course requires you to come to the main Palomar campus in San Marcos to take TWO exams during the semester.\u00a0 (One exam \u2013 Exam #2 \u2013 is given online.)<\/p>\n<p>Dates for Exams #1 and #3 will be posted early August.\u00a0 The exams will be administered at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/tutoring\/\">STAR Tutoring\/ Proctoring Center<\/a>\u00a0located on the first\u00a0floor of\u00a0the library at the main campus. \u00a0A photo ID, scantron, and a #2 pencil will be needed for each exam.\u00a0Please note that I cannot make any exceptions to this policy of taking exams on the main campus, and any exceptions to the various dates that exams will be administered.\u00a0Each exam will be available for at least four days (including Saturday).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Exam #1 on campus:<\/strong> Monday, September 23; Tuesday, September 24; Wednesday, September 25; Thursday, September 26; and Saturday, September 28 (9\/27 is a holiday &#8211; Native American Day)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exam #2 is online:<\/strong> Tuesday, October 29; Wednesday, October 30; Thursday, October 31; Friday, November 1; and Saturday, November 2<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exam #3 on campus:<\/strong> Tuesday, December 10; Wednesday, December 11; Thursday, December 12; Friday, December 13; and Saturday, December 14<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>* <\/strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;color: #ff00ff\">Attending a religious service (outside of your own religion and that you are not familiar with) is required in this course.\u00a0 You will have a selection of religions to choose from and the date of participation will be at you convenience before the due date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>General Course Work<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>The general course work will consist of the following:\u00a0 (1) weekly readings from the texts and articles posted on Canvas, (2) weekly timed online quizzes, (3) regular discussion board forums, and (4) approximately five film assignments (watching a film and answering questions).<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is no orientation meeting;<\/strong> however, students will need to submit a discussion post Thursday, August 22 by 11:59pm as a form of attendance. Courtesy reminder emails will be sent one week prior to the beginning of the semester.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Adding\/Crashing the Course<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/em>If you are on a waitlist and\/or would like to add the class, please send me an email by Monday, August 19.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Accessing the Course<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are enrolled, you should be able to access this online course by Monday, August 19.\u00a0 I will send an e-mail notifying you when the course is available.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for taking the time to review the information.
