Thank you for your interest in the course. Below is general information about the face-to-face and online sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Catalog Description<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This course is a cross-cultural survey of religious beliefs and practices with an emphasis on small-scale societies. Topics include but are not limited to rituals, myths, shamanism, altered states of consciousness, healing, magic, divination, witchcraft, death, new religious movements, and globalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.palomar.edu\/amobilia\/magic-and-folk-religions\/\">Catalog and SLO information<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>This course satisfies: CSU Area C2 \u2013 Arts and Humanities; UC Area 3B \u2013 Arts and Humanities<\/em>* Students should be aware that this is not a course that promotes a particular religious or spiritual belief. We will not discuss whether a religion is true or false. The focus will be on critically exploring different religious beliefs and practices with as little judgment as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Text Requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one required text to purchase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Stein, Rebecca L. and Philip L. Stein. 2017. <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/The_Anthropology_of_Religion_Magic_and_W.html?id=1ajODgAAQBAJ\"><em>The Anthropology of Religion, Magic, and Witchcraft.<\/em>4th&nbsp;ed. New York: Routledge. ISBN-10:&nbsp;9781138692527<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Course Requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Online Course:<\/strong> For the <a href=\"https:\/\/online.osu.edu\/resources\/learn\/whats-difference-between-asynchronous-and-synchronous-learning\">asynchronous <\/a>online sections, we will not be meeting at a certain time each week as a class.&nbsp; To take this online course you need to have regular access to a reliable computer(s) and also have a backup in case problems arise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to meet the learning outcomes of this course, students may be required to have a webcam turned on during assessments (such as quizzes, exams, and presentations).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>General Coursework<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Online Course:<\/strong> For the <strong>asynchronous<\/strong> sections, the general coursework will consist of weekly readings from the texts and articles posted on Canvas,&nbsp;weekly online quizzes, discussion board forums and\/or assignments, and exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Accessing the Online Course<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are enrolled, you should be able to access the online class by Monday, August 25.&nbsp; I will send an e-mail notifying you when the course is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adding\/Crashing a Course<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are on a waitlist and\/or would like to add one of the sections, please send me an email by Monday, August 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for taking the time to review the information.
